Video Artist Kit Fitzgerald had a decade-long collaboration with legendary Jazz drummer, composer and activist Max Roach. Kit and Max presented their first live performance of Jazz and video art at La Mama, NYC in 1985.  To celebrate the centennial of Max Roach, The Joyce Theater, NYC commissioned Fitzgerald to create the short film, “Max Roach Live.” It premiered at the Joyce Theater Production “Max Roach 100” in April 2024.

Because the material for this film was shot in NTSC video format 40 years ago it was not suitable for modern projection. Fitzgerald engaged WCI’s video restoration services to clean up, restore and re-master the footage while staying true to the original aesthetic of the material. The result is an inspiring film capturing the Jazz genius of Max Roach and the ground breaking video art of Kit Fitzgerald.
